UNDERSTANDING SOW FARROWING PROCESS<\/h2>\n

\u201cGood management in the farrowing house is the key to the successful rearing of healthy pigs and low pre-weaning mortality\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Farrowing production target for 2016-2017<\/h3>\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Average total pigs born = 15 pigs\/sow<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Average pigs born alive = 14 pigs\/sow<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Average pigs weaned = 12.5 pigs\/sow<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Pre-weaning mortality < 10%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Average weaning weight 6.5 kg@ 21 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Average litter weight gain = 2.8-3.0 kg\/day<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

How does sow farrowing process start?<\/h3>\n

Gestation Length<\/h3>\n
–\u00a0Average gestation length in sow is 115 days (115+\/-4 days).
\n–\u00a0Gilts and large litter size sows are tend to have a shorten gestation length.
\n–\u00a0Small litter size sows are tend to have a longer gestation length.<\/div>\n

3 Stages of the farrowing process in sows<\/h3>\n

Pre-farrowing period<\/h4>\n
–\u00a010-14 days prior to the due date.
\n–\u00a0Development of mammary glands and swelling vulva.
\n–\u00a0Teat enlargement occurs, can see clearly the veins supplying the udder.
\n–\u00a0Reduce appetite.
\n–\u00a0Standing up and lying down.
\n–\u00a0Chewing and moving the bedding around.
\n–\u00a0Show making bed behavior.
\n–\u00a0Piglets will delivery within 12 hours, milk is secreted into mammary gland (use gentle hand & finger massage).
\n–\u00a0Slight mucous discharge on the vulva lips.
\n–\u00a0See small round pellet of feces, called meconium.
\n–\u00a0Piglets are getting ready to be pushed out of the uterus.<\/div>\n

The farrowing process<\/h4>\n
–\u00a0This process may take 3-4 hours.
\n–\u00a0Piglets are usually delivered in every 15 minutes.
\n–\u00a0Farrowing assistant must pay more attention to the sows that have problem at last farrowing process and old parity sows.
\n–\u00a0Administer oxytocin to farrowing sows those deliver 6th-7th piglets at 20-30 IU\/sow.
\n–\u00a0NSAID injection such as Paracetamol, Dichlofenac, Tolfedine or Flunixin 2 days consecutively is recommended.
\n–\u00a0Inject fast action antibiotic such as Ceftiofur sodium.
\n–\u00a0If sow trying to push out the piglets but no piglets come out, farrowing assistants have to make decision to do farrowing assist.<\/div>\n

Delivery of the placenta<\/h4>\n
–\u00a0\u00be of farrowing process.
\n–\u00a0Sows will call piglets to sucking her milk.
\n–\u00a0After the placenta has been delivered, there will a slight\/sometime heavy discharge for the 2-3days.
\n–\u00a0Wash and clean vulva area, udder and floor with mild disinfectants after farrowing process done is the most recommended.
\n–\u00a0Normal farrowed sows with normal udder, they will eat well and no fever.
\n–\u00a0Farrowed sows those show MMA symptoms, they will have longer and heavy discharge, eat less, got fever. Fast action antibiotics must be use for treatment such as Ceftiofur sodium.<\/div>\n
