Sows produced stillborn piglets caused by uterine inertia.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>Factors that affects the failure to deliver piglets<\/h4>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0A large litter with uterine inertia(mostly in old parity sows).<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Very large piglets with small pelvis.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a02 or more piglets presented in the birth canal at the same time.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Illness of the sow: acute MMA.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Dead pigs inside the uterus.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Mummified piglets.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Too fat sow.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Heavy panting caused by high temperature and poor ventilation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Investigation<\/h3>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Preparing a container of clean water containing mild antiseptic (Dettol, Betadine) and obstetrical lubricant (KY Gel, Cooking oil).<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Do not use detergents or soup as lubricant.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Don\u2019t attempt to force a dry hand into the vagina of the sows.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Wash the hands and arm well<\/h3>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Ensure the finger nails are short.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0If sow is lying down on left hand side, use your left hand.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0If sow is lying down on right hand side, use your right hand.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Hold the fingers of hand together and insert the hand into the vagina, progress to cervix and beyond then you can feel the entrance to each horn of uterus.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Take all piglets out as soon as possible.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Inject oxytocin 20-30 IU, intramuscular\/intravenous<\/h3>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0To increase speed of farrowing process, stop bleeding following delivery process and increase milk let down.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Piglets sucking the sow\u2019s teats helps stimulate uterine contraction.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Gentle massage of the udder with hands may be helpful.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Inject fast action antibiotics and Non Steroid-Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID)<\/h3>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Inject Ceftiofur 2 times, on farrowing day and 1 day after farrowed to prevent any bacterial infection is recommended.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Flunixin or Diclofenac or Paracetamol could be given to farrowed sows on the same day as Ceftiofur or when needed.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Always monitor the sow frequently over the next 24 hrs to make sure that infection is not developing in the udder or uterus<\/h3>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Placenta has been expelled.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Sows call piglets to suck her udder normally.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Sows can stand up for drinking and eating normally.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>Effects of udder edema and failure of milk let down<\/h4>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Excessive fluid in the mammary gland.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Affected gilts and sows are normal with no fever or loss of appetite<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Affected sows show hard mammary glands, uncomfortable but no pain<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Produce less quantity and quality of colostrum<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Piglets have diarrhea during lactation period<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Weaned piglets have low immunity<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Leading to PRDC problem in nursery and grower pigs<\/div>\n<div><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-262 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2.jpg\" alt=\"20160602_2\" width=\"815\" height=\"543\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2.jpg 815w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-30x20.jpg 30w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-520x346.jpg 520w, https:\/\/apanano.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160602_2-260x173.jpg 260w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 815px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Figure4 Unhealthy weaned pigs, leading to PRDC problem.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>Control and preventive management<\/h4>\n<div>\u2022\u00a0Antibiotics prevention program must be implemented in pre-farrowing and farrowed sows.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Oxytetracycline LA on 5-7 days before farrowing.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Amoxy+Gentamicin or Amoxy+Enrofloxacin on 1-2 days before farrowing.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Ceftiofur+NSAID+Oxytocin on farrowing day.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Ceftiofur+NSAID on 1 day after farrowed.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\uf0a7\u00a0Some sows that cannot eat, may inject same antibiotics as previous day for another shot.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\u2022\u00a0Identify the problems early and medicate individual sows.<\/div>\n<div>\u2022\u00a0Inject oxytocin 1-2 ml; 2 times\/day (am\/pm).<\/div>\n<div>\u2022\u00a0Re-check late-gestation feeding program particular 7 days before farrowing.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0High feed intake, excessive energy &amp; protein intake may cause MMA in pre-farrowing sows.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Limit feed intake (2.5kg\/day) for pre-farrowing sows start from entering day to farrowing house until farrowing day, then change to lactation feed with maximize feed intake until weaning.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Add fresh &amp; clean water in feeder help to minimize MMA symptoms and improve feed intake during lactation period.<\/div>\n<div>\u2022\u00a0Ensure that pre-farrowing sows have no symptom of constipation.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Increase level of fiber (&gt;5.5%) in gestation feed.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Provide enough drinking water for pre-farrowing sows.<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0Keep them under good ventilation and cool condition, no heat stress, no panting.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To improve sow health and piglets weaning weight, farmers are advised to understand the farrowing problems and follow the guidelines above.<\/div>\n<div>The highlight of next issue is &#8220;Farrowing Management (Part 3): <a href=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/technical-support\/quan-ly-heo-sinh-san-phan-3\/\">MMA and how to overcome it<\/a>&#8220;.
